Sister gift brands, one Foundation engagement: personalization that feels like a gift, and organic discoverability without a dollar of paid ads.
The Maritime Box and The Atlantic Canada Box curate gift boxes from New Brunswick and wider Maritime producers. Almost every order is bought for someone else, often shipped to a different province than the buyer. Both brands had been sharing a theme, navigation, and collection structure — cheap to maintain, confusing to shop. A 90-day Foundation engagement, five focus hours a month, separated the brands, built gift-note and photo personalization without Shopify Plus, and stood up SEO, AEO, and free shopping feeds. Paid advertising was not in scope.
There was no way to make the gift personal. A customer could not write a message to the recipient or add a photo to the box. The product was personal; the interface was not. Collection pages followed internal product categories instead of how people buy gift boxes: by occasion and recipient. Mobile carried most of the sessions and most of the leaks.
On discoverability, product pages were written for the warehouse, not the searcher. No shopping feed existed. When someone asked an assistant for a Maritime gift box recommendation, there was no content shaped in a way an answer engine could cite.
Each brand was designed separately. Personalization was built in the cart and order experience, because native checkout-page code changes require Shopify Plus and these stores are not on Plus. The note and image pass through as line item properties so fulfillment still receives them intact.
Homepage, navigation, and mobile layout were redesigned for each brand rather than as a skin on a shared template. Collection pages were rebuilt around occasion and recipient. Keyword targeting was split on purpose: Maritime leads on personalization and occasion terms; Atlantic Canada leads on regional and national-shipping terms so the catalogs stop competing for the same cluster.
Product titles, descriptions, and URLs were optimized around high-intent keywords. FAQ and answer content was added so the stores can surface in Google and AI answer engines. Product feeds were configured for Google, Microsoft, and Meta as free listings — every resulting shopping click is unpaid media.
The client team was walked through adding products, managing collections, running the shopping feeds, and keeping personalization and SEO healthy, plus written guidance for self-management. Training happened inside the build, not as a document on day 91.
The storefronts are now distinct brands, not a shared template. Senders can write a note and attach a photo. Collections follow occasion and recipient. Feeds exist for free shopping placements. Maritime Box saw 5,000 organic sessions in 30 days with no ad spend on this tier. Domain Rating at the start of the Atlantic Canada write-up was 3.7 — supporting a discoverability approach that leans on feeds and citation rather than outranking incumbents alone. Paid ads, CRM sync, and directory listings sit on a later tier.
