The Shopify SEO Checklist: 12 Free Wins for 2026

Shopify ships with more SEO capability built in than most merchants ever switch on. Before you install an app or hire anyone, work through this checklist: twelve things that cost nothing but time, each with the exact admin path, ordered by impact. This is the Shopify-native version of the general checklist we send store owners on any platform.

Quick answer: The four moves that matter most: edit the Search engine listing on every product, collection, and page (title under 60 characters, description under 155). Submit yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml in Google Search Console and request indexing when you publish. Treat collections as keyword landing pages and blog on a schedule with one keyword per post. And install the three free sales channels (Google and YouTube, Microsoft, Facebook and Instagram by Meta) so your catalog earns free listings everywhere shoppers search and scroll.

01. Search Engine Listings on Every Page

Scroll to the bottom of any product, collection, page, or blog post editor and you will find Search engine listing, with an Edit button. That is where the page title (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155) live. The homepage's own title and description are under Online Store, then Preferences.

The discipline that makes this work: every page gets its own, written around the one search phrase that page deserves to win. Shopify defaults the listing to your product title and the first lines of the description, which is better than nothing and worse than five minutes of intent. Start with your ten best-selling products and your top five collections; that covers most of your traffic potential in an afternoon.

02. Search Console and Shopify's Built-In Sitemap

Shopify generates and maintains your sitemap automatically at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, covering products, collections, pages, and posts. You never touch it. What you do is submit it once in Google Search Console after verifying your domain, and from then on:

  • Request indexing on publish. New product line, new collection, new post: paste the URL into Search Console's inspection bar and request indexing rather than waiting for the next crawl.
  • Mine the Performance report monthly. The queries you already appear for at position 8 to 20 are your cheapest wins; improving those pages moves real traffic faster than chasing new keywords.
  • Glance at Security and Manual Actions. It should say no issues. This is also where you would find out first if something ever goes wrong.

03. Collections Are Your Landing Pages

The most underused SEO surface in Shopify. Category-level searches (womens linen shirts, industrial shelving brackets, organic dog treats canada) carry more volume than almost any single product query, and collections are the pages built to catch them.

Three habits turn collections into ranking assets: name the collection with the phrase people actually search rather than internal jargon; write a real description in the collection editor (a paragraph or two of genuinely useful category guidance, not keyword soup); and set its search engine listing like any other page. If your theme buries collection descriptions, most themes have a setting to show them, and it is worth switching on.

04. Blog on Shopify, One Keyword per Post

Shopify's built-in blog is unglamorous and entirely sufficient. The playbook is the same one we use ourselves: one target keyword per post, chosen with a tool like Ahrefs or Semrush or pulled from your own Search Console queries, answered better than whatever currently ranks, published on a schedule you will still be keeping in six months.

Posts should link to the products and collections they discuss. That internal linking is how a post about choosing the right hiking sock passes authority to the sock collection it recommends, and it is the part most merchant blogs forget.

05. The Three Free Sales Channels

Shopify's biggest free-traffic lever is not on your website at all. Three free channel apps put your entire catalog in front of shoppers on the surfaces where discovery actually happens:

  • Google and YouTube channel: syncs your catalog to Google Merchant Center for free listings across Search, Shopping, Maps, and YouTube.
  • Microsoft channel: Microsoft Merchant Center, Bing Shopping, and Copilot answers. You can import your Google feed rather than rebuilding.
  • Facebook and Instagram by Meta: one Meta catalog powering Facebook Shop, Instagram product tags, and any ads you run later.

Setup order, approval checklists, and the mistakes that get products disapproved are covered step by step in our Shopify product feed setup guide. Hands-on time is roughly 20 to 30 minutes per channel.

06. Product Data Hygiene

The same product data feeds your store pages, your sitemap, and all three merchant catalogs, so hygiene here pays four times at once:

  • Unique product descriptions. Manufacturer boilerplate pasted onto your page competes with every other store using the same paragraph. Rewrite at least your top sellers.
  • Alt text on every product image. Edit it per image in the product media editor. It is accessibility, image search, and feed quality in one field.
  • GTINs where they exist, and the custom product flag where they do not. Missing identifiers are a top disapproval reason in Merchant Center.
  • Prices and availability that match everywhere. Feed values that disagree with the live page get products suspended.

07. Theme Speed and the App Audit

Page speed is a ranking factor, a conversion factor, and on Shopify it is mostly an app problem. Every installed app can inject scripts into your theme, and they keep loading even after you stop using the app.

  • Audit your apps twice a year. Uninstall what you do not use, and check the theme code for leftover script tags from apps you removed (Shopify lists them under theme app embeds).
  • Compress images before upload or let Shopify's CDN do the work by uploading reasonable sizes; a 4000-pixel hero on a phone screen is pure penalty.
  • Check your store in Google PageSpeed Insights quarterly. You are not chasing a perfect score, you are catching regressions.

If your theme is several years old, a move to a current Online Store 2.0 theme often buys more speed than any amount of app pruning. That is a bigger project, and the one place on this list where a developer starts to earn their fee.

08. Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I edit SEO titles and descriptions in Shopify?

Every product, collection, page, and blog post editor has a Search engine listing section at the bottom: click Edit to set the page title and meta description. The homepage title and description live under Online Store, then Preferences.

Does Shopify generate a sitemap automatically?

Yes. Every Shopify store serves a sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml covering products, collections, pages, and blog posts. You do not create it; you just submit that URL once in Google Search Console.

What is the best free Shopify SEO app?

Start with none. The highest-impact items, search engine listings, Search Console, collections, blogging, and the free sales channels, are all built into Shopify. Add an SEO app only when you have a specific gap left, like bulk-editing image alt text, and audit apps yearly because each one adds script weight to your theme.

How do collections help Shopify SEO?

Collections are your category landing pages, and category keywords like womens linen shirts or industrial shelving brackets usually carry more volume than any single product. Give each collection a keyword-matched title, a real description written on the page, and its own search engine listing.

Are the Google, Microsoft, and Meta sales channels on Shopify really free?

Yes. The Google and YouTube channel, the Microsoft channel, and the Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel are all free apps that sync your catalog for free listings. You only pay when you choose to run ads on top of the feed.

Why is my Shopify store not showing up on Google?

The usual causes in order: the store is new and not yet indexed (submit the sitemap in Search Console and request indexing), the store is password protected, the domain is still the default myshopify.com URL, or every page shares the same title so nothing ranks for anything specific.

Do I need Shopify Plus for any of this checklist?

No. Every item works on Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans. Plus matters for B2B features, checkout customization, and volume, not for SEO fundamentals.

Done with the free layer? That is where we come in

Everything on this checklist is yours to do, and none of it needs an agency. Where Shopify merchants bring in AtlanticWorks is the layer after it: feeds that keep throwing disapprovals, themes that need real speed work, B2B and wholesale builds, ERP integration, and content programs at a scale one owner cannot write alone. A free assessment tells you which side of that line each of your next wins sits on.
